PROCESS:

Dialog
Our design process begins with dialog. In our initial conversations with clients we talk about their ideas, budget, timeframe, and our mutual commitment to sustainable design. We review their collection of architectural imagery to clarify what they find appealing such as a fondness for a particular material or a strong connection to the outdoors. In our budget discussions, we explain the importance of balancing the size of the home with the level of finishes they prefer.

Sustainability is the common thread in all of our projects. In our dialog with clients we discuss ways to make their home as energy and resource efficient as possible. We encourage them to become leaders in their community by incorporating the U.S. Green Building Council’s ‘LEED for Homes’ program in their project. We review the many benefits of the program, such as how it promotes durability and requires third party inspections during construction.

This dialog continues throughout the design process and construction of their home. Whether it’s a quick phone call before work, a .pdf sketch sent via email, or an on-site coordination meeting, we enjoy working closely with our clients to meets their goals.

Sustainable design requires a site specific response. Sunbiosis PLC. Jeff Sties, Architect.Analysis
Sustainable design requires a site specific response. Our clients enjoy walking their site with us and sharing their ideas. While we check the compass for solar orientation, they point out particular views and other features they know by heart. Following the site visit, we further explore the potential of each site by considering climatic data, topography and drainage patterns, solar angles, and other important factors. Beyond the immediate boundaries of the site, we are interested in the use of local materials, craftspeople, and vernacular forms. This contextual information gives each project a unique language and sense of place.

Tools
Drawings, models and three dimensional renderings are the primary tools we use to communicate the design intent from concept to construction. For example, an early schematic design may include shading studies to properly size overhangs for to control solar gain. Three dimensional perspectives allow the client to experience the exterior massing or the layout of a kitchen. Detailed framing drawings demonstrate to the builder how to use lumber more efficiently while increasing the insulation in wall cavities. Typed specifications and schedules document material selections, system installation requirements, finishes, and quality.

Teamwork
Landscape architects, engineers, builders and our LEED for Homes Providers and Raters are an important part of the sustainable design team. By integrating theirknowledge and expertise into the process, we can more effectively realize and advance sustainable design opportunities.

Builders for example, can suggest appropriate local materials and craftspeople capable of creating high quality work. They are also essential in providing early cost estimates and creating a construction schedule.

Jeff Sties, Architect.A landscape architect can suggests appropriate drought resistant species and how to best utilize a rainwater cistern. They work closely with architects and owners to enhance the connection between indoor spaces and outdoor rooms anchoring the house to the site.

During construction, we play an active role to support the client, the builder and the LEED for Homes Providers and Raters. Our participation in the construction phase often includes making final selections with the client and checking shop drawings submitted by the cabinet maker. We assist the builder by attending coordinating meetings on-site and providing them with additional information. We supply drawings and specifications to our LEED Raters so they can quantify and qualify our certification in the LEED for Homes program. Our participation during construction is a key component of the sustainable design process. It directly benefits our clients by helping to ensure the final product has met all of their goals.
